Nantucket Bicycle Trip - 2006

This September, we once again embarked on one of our favorite activities, our bicycling-camping trip to Nantucket Island, where we stay at BSA Camp Richards.

This year the preceding Friday was a Medfield "no-school" day, we had were able to plan an extra day on the island for those who were able to make it.  (A second group departed Medfield Saturday morning.)  We carpooled to the ferry in Hyannis and left the dock under grey skies.  By the time we arrived at Nantucket Harbor, it was raining.

From there we bicycled through the cobbled streets of Nantucket to BSA Camp Richards.  All of our gear was transported from the ferry to Camp Richards via taxi, so there was no need to bicycle wearing heavy backpacks.

Although we got rather wet on the way, the rain had let up by the time we arrived at the camp.  We set up our tents, had lunch and then set out to explore the island.  The sun came out and help dry things out.  We had a great dinner back at the camp (steak tips).

Saturday, after cooking breakfast, we all headed back to the ferry landing to meet the second wave of scouts/adults who had left Hyannis that morning.  Weather was absolutely perfect.

With everyone now back camp, we had a quick lunch and headed off to the Nantucket Airport to attend the Air Show.  There were many vintage, stunt and military aircraft  on display.

There were also flying performances in stunt planes, a wing walker, an impressive demonstration of the A-10 "Warthog" combat fighter, (including a nifty "flyby" of a A-10 paired with a World War II P-38 fighter.  The feature event was the Navy "Blue Angels" precision flying team.  Wow!  That night, another fine dinner was prepared by the scouts (pasta & meatballs.)

Sunday morning, after breakfast, we packed up and rode back to the ferry.  (Our gear was transported back via taxi.)  Upon return to Hyannis, it was pouring and we all got soaked while loading up the cars before heading back to Medfield.
