Nantucket Bicycle Trip - 2009
This October, on Columbus Day weekend, we embarked on one of our favorite activities, our bicycling-camping trip to Nantucket Island, where we stay at BSA Camp Richards. Because of the "no-school" holiday on Monday, we planned an extra day on the island. Nearly the entire troop participated in this trip. On Saturday, we carpooled to Hyannis and then took the ferry to Nantucket Harbor. From there we bicycled through the cobbled streets of Nantucket to BSA Camp Richards. As usual, we arranged for all of our gear to be transported from the ferry to Camp Richards via taxi. For the first time in many years, we had the one campsite at Richards, that has Adirondack shelters. These were used by the Scouts, while the adults slept in tents. As can be seen in the photos below, we explored the island, cooked meals, and many did map & compass work. We also participated in a joint service project (brush clearing) at Richards with the other Scout troops staying there. This enabled the Scouts to engage in two of the reasons why boys join Boy Scouts: to cut stuff and to burn stuff. Sunday morning, after breakfast, we packed up and rode back to the ferry. (Our gear was transported back via taxi.) Upon return to Hyannis, we loaded up the cars before heading back to Medfield.
