TROOP 10 GUIDELINES FOR NUT FREE TRIPS & MEALS
(Adopted May 2009)

We are attempting to provide a safe environment for a scout that is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts & sesame seeds. This is a very difficult process to perfect and because of the cross contamination issue, we will ask that all scouts on designated “Nut Free” functions follow this procedure.  The simplest way to achieve a successful nut free menu is to purchase simple ingredients and to avoid pre-packaged (rice mixes, hamburger helper, Hungry Man dinners etc.) & prepared foods.  Bakery items are difficult to determine, especially self serve items.  Store brands & generic brands are notorious for poor labeling and potential contamination.  The large, nation wide brands are typically the best at control of ingredients & labeling.  Read all labels thoroughly including ingredients, allergen information and “manufactured in a facility…”

In all cases please make the best possible effort to be sure that ingredient labels are included, even if the food is repacked for traveling.  The following are some suggestions:

Breakfast:
Oatmeal - Quaker Plain Quick Oats; Quaker packets are ok just not nut flavored
Cold Cereal - read ingredient label
Bread - Freihoffer or Pepperidge Farm White or 100% whole wheat, NO multigrain; No store brands or smaller bakeries; read label
Bisquick - good
Pancake mix - just add water type Hungry Jack ok; Aunt Jemima ok;  Krusteaz NO
Bagels - pre-packaged Lenders; no bakery or self serve
Tortillas - Mission & Chi-Chi ok
English Muffins - Thomas-ok

The list above is simply for suggestion; it is by no means exclusive.  The easiest way to keep to the program is to buy simple ingredients
