Troop 10 FAQ for Camp Squanto
(updated for 2008)
Camp Squanto issues a Leaders Guide for Summer Camp, from which excerpts are
distributed to the Scouts each Spring. It is quite inclusive, but some
subjects are not covered quite as clearly as they could be, especially for new scouts (and
their parents).
This FAQ attempts to clarify or highlight these areas, as well as to cover
information that applies specifically to Troop 10's activities at camp.
 | Please note that Page 9 of the 2008 Camp Squanto Guidebook states:
|
"[Camp Squanto] business phones may be used in emergencies to contact
parents with the permission of your troop scoutmaster.
Cell phones are not allowed to be in the possession of
campers while at Squanto."
 | Troop 10 traditionally camps at the Pioneer site at Squanto.
This is one of three sites closest to the waterfront. (However, the price
we pay for this convenience, is having to climb "Heartbreak Hill" to get to the Dining
Hall and most of the classes.)
|
 | Troop 10 reserves their "Troop Swim" time from 2:00-3:00 each day.
(This is not a mandatory activity.) Scouts desiring to participate in this daily swim should
not schedule merit badge classes during this time.
|
 | All troops at Squanto have a troop photograph taken by the Camp
Photographer on Monday. These must be ordered in
advance through the troop, before camp begins.
|
 | "Flight to Eagle" is a program for
new scouts or first year campers, focusing on scouting skills needed to
advance to the Tenderfoot, Second and First Class ranks. The FTE class
is held from 9:00-11:00 each day. Scouts may choose regular merit badges
classes for the other periods.
|
 | "Outpost Camping" is a
camp-wide activity where scouts can "sleep under the stars" (ie, no
tent) for one night. This is usually done on Thursday night, weather
permitting. All participating scouts sleep as a group, in their choice
of three areas of camp, outside the regular troop campsites. The areas
are Torch Point, Family Beach and the Dunes (all located on the back side of
Fawn Pond, opposite from the swim area). Signup for Outpost is
done at the bulletin board outside the Dining Hall.
|
 | As a troop, Troop 10 spends only one week at Camp Squanto. However,
Scouts can attend an extra week of camp either individually, or with other
members of Troop 10, as part of the
Provisional "Provo" Troop of Camp Squanto. (The Provo Troop camps in the Iroquois
campsite.)
|
 | "Eagle Week" is a special week at Camp Squanto for Scouts
who are First Class rank or higher, and provides a means for them to work on
the merit badges required for Eagle rank. Eagle Week is the 3rd week of
August (Sunday - Friday).
